City residents have set an example worth emulating by initiating the construction work of a memorial of Ghadar fame martyr Sukhdev Thapar at his ancestral house at Nau Ghara Mohalla.
The preservation work of the memorial was inaugurated here today by a kin of martyr, senior advocate Mohan Lal Jhanji and his nephew Bharat Bhushan Thapar. Dr Hardip Singh, convener of the Shaheed Sukhdev Yadgar Committee, in the presence of family members of Shaheed Sukhdev, said that the construction of the memorial would be done in a phased manner.
The work on the first phase started today. The front of the house will be renovated and a statue of the martyr will be installed. In the second phase, a memorial gate will also be constructed at the historic Mohalla Naughara. A memorial gate will be erected at the entry
Mr Thapar, while addressing the gathering, said that he was sore over the attitude of the state government who had not bothered to do anything about the preservation. Dr Hardip appealed to all organisations and individuals to cooperate with the NGO.
While the inauguration was in the progress, tenants living in the house created a scene there. Though Dr Hardip Singh had already said that they would not displace the poor family living inside the house, the woman, presently occupying the house, tried to stop the work on the memorial. She was seen protesting against the construction at the site. Dr Hardip Singh assured her once again that the NGO would first make arrangements to rehabilitate her before getting the house vacated.
Sukhdev, who was executed alongwith Bhagat Singh and Rajguru, was born in the Chaura Bazar area called Nau Ghara in the city. While the house remained unknown to anybody till three years ago, the Thapars of the city set up a trust named Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar Memorial Trust to look after the historical place and to create awareness among people about the martyr. The Thapars and the district administration then decided to set a memorial at his birthplace. It was another matter that nothing came out of it so far.
